Blue-Winged Teal Duck

Description

The blue-winged teal ducks belong to the same species as Goose, duck, and swans. The blue-winged teal ducks are fast in flight and turn in unison when flying as a flock. These ducks prefer thriving in warm weather and as a result, they are absent in North America in cold months & inhabit South America during the cold season/winter.

Habitat
The main habitats for these game birds are fresh ponds, small lakes, and marshes. But, in summer, these birds live in shallow freshwater marshes & ponds in open country and wetlands near the coastal region. During the winter season, the blue-winged teal ducks migrate and occupy shallow waters in coastal and inland regions.

Description
Measuring 40cm in length and a wingspan of 58cm, blue-winged teal ducks weigh about 370g. An adult male has a greyish-blue head, a white facial crescent, a light brown body and a white patch to its rear and black tail.

Adult females are mottled brown with a whitish area at the base of their bills. However, both the male & female birds have sky blue wing coverts, yellow legs, and a green speculum.

Diet
The seed of various grasses, smartweeds, pondweeds, and sedges comprise the main diet of these game birds. However, although plant material is the main diet, these ducks also feed on insects, crustaceans, bivalves, snails, etc.

Nesting
The male and female start pairing early winter and continue pairing until the spring season as they migrate. The male often displays varied courtship displays to impress their mate with an aim of mating. The nest site is usually located on the ground in a coastal meadow, hayfield or prairie depending on the game bird's habitat at the time. The nest is just a shallow depression with weeds and grasses lined horizontally. To protect their eggs and young ones from predators, the females conceal their nests using the surrounding vegetation.

Eggs
Females lay 9 to 13 eggs that are either dull white or tinged olive. Incubation is done by females only for 23 to 24 days. The young ones leave the nest looking for food after a day/24 hours of hatching. Finally, the females tend the young ones for a few weeks until they start making short flights after 38 to 49 days.
