Description

Bluetick Coonhound originates from America and dates back to the colonial era. It's known as an active and energetic dog whose persona is friendly. This breed has a unique color and pattern, which makes it easy to identify the hound. Besides, it has a cold nose and the bawl mouth that gives it a loud bark. This dog breed's body structure is perfect for hunting, but its loyalty and friendliness is excellent for anyone looking for companionship. Bluetick Coonhounds love exploring outdoors and make a great pet when trained how to socialize with people.

The dog breed carries the head high, and the tail is always over its back. The name Bluetick comes from the "blue" coloring seen in the black ticking on a white background giving it a navy blue appearance. This ticking appears on the dog's body in variously-shaped spots on the ears, back, and sides. The head is mostly predominantly black. But there are some with brown markings on the muzzle sides, above the yes and around the chest area down to the legs. Blueticks without markings are only white and black.

When standing, the Blueticks Coonhounds measures between 21 inches and 27 inches tall. The male is bigger than the female weighing between 55 pounds and 80 pounds. Females weigh between 45 pounds and 65 pounds. Their feet have arched toes and resemble those of a cat, but paws are more prominent than what most dog breeds have. The hind legs are moderately bent around the hocks, though all legs look straight when looked from the rear or the front.

What are the Common Problems in Bluetick Coonhound?

A Bluetick Coonhounds bred by recognized clubs are high-quality breeds. They are healthy and not likely to suffer from genetic diseases. But, there are still some conditions that can affect these hunting dogs, and they include:

Hip Dysplasia- This disease cause arthritis, which can lead to lameness.

Ear infection- Also known as otitis occurs when ear care is neglected.

Bloat- This is a condition caused by fast drinking or eating, leading to high production of gas. The intestines become twisted and cut off the blood supply. It is a dangerous condition that requires quick medical attention.

The Diet and Nutrition for a Bluetick Coonhound

A Bluetick Coonhound needs dry dog food daily. It should take about two and a half cups daily and must be watched closely not to eat fast. The best way to prevent this is by giving small meals throughout the day to prevent bloating.

Besides, the dog owner must watch its weight. Gaining weight can shorten the life of this dog breed because it increases the risks of getting various diseases. A veterinarian can give recommendations on the best way to fee and exercise the dog if it's gaining weight.

Grooming

Bluetick Coonhound sheds moderately since it has a short, smooth coat. A simple weekly brushing with a dog glove, a grooming mitt made of rubber or a brush with medium bristles is enough. The nails should also be trimmed regularly because when not, they cause this hunting dog discomfort, and walking becomes a problem.

Keeping fit

Since Bluetick dog breeds are mainly bred for hunting activities, they need to exercise and keep fit as much as possible. They enjoy outdoor activities and can run up and down in a well-fenced yard. A long walk while on a leash is also suitable for them, but the person walking must be careful with them. They can smell prey and run away wildly.

Temperament

Bluetick Coonhound is adventurous, strong-willed, independent, but overall it's friendly. However, it is not overly obedient and will quickly follow their nose to the bushes or even food; any pleas to stop will on deaf ears. What's more, the outgoing character of this dog breed enables it to befriend strangers and other dogs quickly. They are the best if you want to have other animals in your home as they befriend them with time.

Bluetick Coonhound is a great dog. But to enjoy the qualities of this breed, one should get one from a group or rescue shelter that can confirm it's the original breed.

History

Initially, the Bluetick Coonhound was known as the English coonhound. The name was changed in 1946; throughout the years, this breed was recognized by different kennel clubs. But it wasn't until 2009 when it was accepted by American Kennel Club group officially.
