Regarded as Hungary's pride, these dogs are beautiful, smart and will definitely brighten your day. Keep reading as we tell you more about this breed.

Breed description and coat colors
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla is an active, medium-sized, versatile hunting dog with a robust build and strong bone structure. They have a slightly elongated body, long legs, and graceful gait. They also have distinctive hairy eyebrows and mustaches, as well as a noble and graceful appearance that gives an impression of great stamina. Their nostrils are broad, wide, and well developed with powerful, strong jaws. Adult females stand at approximately 22-23 inches and weigh 47-55 pounds while males weigh 45-60 pounds with a height of 23-25 inches. With a life expectancy of 12-14 years, you can adopt this breed and have the peace of mind that you'll form a long-lasting bond together.

Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla has a tough, wiry coat that resists harsh weather conditions when he's on the hunt. The coat is close fitting on the neck and body and is approximately 1.5 inches in length. Their golden rust coat is stiff to touch and wiry to offer protection from elements. What's more, under this coat is a wooly undercoat that becomes thicker in the winter for insulation. Coat color is russet gold or reddish-brown, and small white marks on the feet and chest shouldn't be penalized.

Temperament
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas are natural hunters, pointers, and retrievers and thus perfect for anyone passionate about hunting. They have high energy and above average trainability, and when you take him to the field, he is easy to please. When he is not hunting, Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla is a loyal, highly affectionate, caring, and gentle-mannered household dog who likes interacting with your entire family. He is always jovial and when he realizes you are in a bad mood, he will try to cheer you up. He adores outdoor programs, be it running, cycling along the neighborhood or walking in the forest. A combination of high energy and intelligence can make him destructive, especially if he doesn't receive enough regular physical and mental stimulation.

History
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas were developed in 1930 by breeding the German Wirehaired Pointers with the Smooth-Coated Vizslas, which had unusually thick and protective coats. The aim was to produce a dog with a combination of a heavier coat with Vizsla's color and a more substantial frame that could be well suited to work in cold weather and retrieve from thick underground and icy water. The breeding did not disappoint, and it produced optimum hunting dogs with the agility and grace of the Vizslas and the hardiness and endurance of the pointers. The Wired Vizslas have two cousins; the rare longhaired Vizslas and the Smooth Vizslas.

The first Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla to be imported from Hungary was spotted in the UK in the mid-1970s, although the first litter was born in 1992. With more than 50 Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas registered with the Kennel Club in 1995, a group of enthusiasts came together and decided to start a breed club and promote this multipurpose breed. The Wirehaired Vizslas were officially recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 2006. They were admitted into AKC in 2008 and one year later, they became eligible to compete in AKC performance events. However, they had to wait until 2014 to be officially recognized by the AKC.

Hunting aspect
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas are versatile, natural hunters endowed with excellent noses and above average trainability. Their development was undertaken by shooting men and gamekeepers who wanted tough, all-purpose hunting dogs. Due to their wiry, protective coat, they can hunt even in the harshest conditions. They are all-around hunting dogs and can be used in meadows, in waters and forests too in any game related to before as well as after shooting. They have an exceptional ability to search for smaller animals, signal their masters whenever they spot any game, and find and fetch wounded animals.

These bird dogs have natural instincts to work closer to their masters and follow commands to make hunting a great experience. For instance, he searches for the birds from heavy covers with a downwind approach to prevent spooking the quarry. Once in position, he waits patiently for the command from the master to flush the birds. When the birds flush away explosively, it becomes easier for the master to make a clean shot and he watches the birds closely to monitor where the wounded ones will fall. He is always determined to remain on the scent even when swimming, and he retrieves the game with confidence and utmost tenderness.

Bottom line
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas are natural hunters developed to be agile and fast. In the field, they make great hunting companions that closely follow the commands from their masters and retrieve any game excellently in both the land and in water. At home, they are lively, sensitive, affectionate, and gentle-mannered, although they are fearless and possess protective instincts. In other words, they are multi-purpose pointing dogs perfect for hunting and household companions.

The HWVs temperament is calm, gentle and extremely loyal. Its sensitive nature makes this breed one that does not respond well to heavy handed training or harsh discipline. It has a lively, outgoing personality which often has a comical side.

In Europe and the UK, the HWV is well-known as a deerstalker and is also a favorite of falconers. This breed is a strong swimmer, enjoys the water, and is a natural water retriever. Because it is one of the versatile gun dog breeds, it must be able to work in the field, forest and water, and hunt both fur and feather.

The HWVs easy going and adaptable nature make it a wonderful family companion dog in addition to being a superb hunting companion. Because of its keen desire to be with people, this breed does not make a good kennel dog.
