Description

The Korthals Griffon is a hard-working dog breed used in hunting as a gun dog. Also known as the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon for its harsh, low shedding coat, this dog breed loves the water and is a great hunter.

Did you know the Korthals Griffon is a rare dog breed, and finding puppies can be hard? Also, did you know that the Korthals Griffon dog breed is loyal, affectionate, and gentle around children? Quick-witted and outgoing, the Korthals Griffon is the very picture of a hard-working and honest sporting dog.

In this post, we discuss the history of the Korthals Griffon dog breed, its general appearance, coat colors, and more.

History of the Korthals Griffon Dog Breed
Eduard Karel Korthals first bred the Korthals Griffon Pointers in 1873. As the first breeder of the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, he named the dog breed after himself. He later moved to Germany from the Netherlands, where he continued developing the breed.

His goal was to develop a hunting dog that boasts of stamina, courage, and intelligence. Based on history, it's believed that Eduard Karel Korthals used French and German Pointers to create the Korthals Griffon dog breed.

He produced three dogs and named them Lina, Querida, and Moustache I. They, in turn, provided the best pups for the Korthals Griffon dog breed.

After moving to Germany, Korthals continued to breed the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. He did this while working in Prince of Solms-Braunfel's kennels. For his work in developing a hunting and retrieving dog of exceptional quality, Korthals received the Kaiser award. This special medal recognized Korthals's work.

Sadly, he passed away at the age of 44, but Korthals Griffon dog breed enthusiasts in Europe continued with his work. Thanks to their continued work, Korthals Griffon became one of the most popular hunting dogs. They would point, flush, and retrieve game birds, waterfowls, and others.

Recognition of the Korthal Griffon Dog Breed
The Korthals Griffon is always eager to please and enjoy working with their owners. Due to their popularity in Europe, the Korthals Griffon dog breed was first exhibited in the US and registered as a Russian Setter. In 1887, the American Kennel Club recognized the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, and today, it's the 38th breed.

The breeds recognition did not end there. Next, the dog breed was also exhibited at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog show. Sixteen Korthals Griffon dogs were first exhibited in 1916, leading to their recognition by the Kennel Club.

Today, these handsome bird dogs lead an active and outdoor life in cities and rural areas around the world. Anyone who wants to share their home with the Korthals Griffons would have to register with breeders.

General Appearance
The Korthals Griffon is a medium-sized hunting dog with a square-shaped head and strong limbs. As such, the breed can cover all terrain types. The head features large and well open eyes, which are more rounded than elliptical. They have a friendly and intelligent expression.

The eye color ranges from brown to yellow. When it comes to the ears, they are medium in size. They are also close to the head and set high. The coat has distinguishing features. First off, the dog has a double coat.

Its outer coat is wiry, straight and of medium length. What you need to know is that the wiry or harsh texture protects the dog in rough cover. The undercoat is beautiful and thick. As such, it offers insulation and water resistance to the hunting dog.

Depending on the hormonal cycle of the dog, climate, and season, the coat color can range from brown to grey, chestnut roan to steel grey, and liver. The accepted breed colors for Kennel Club registration include:

Liver brown with white hairs
Liver Roan
Solid liver/brown
White and brown
Steel grey with liver

The neck is long and slightly arched while its back is firm and strong. It descends in a gentle slope to the base of the tail. When it comes to the chest, it must neither be narrow or wide. Instead, it should be medium in width allowing freedom of movement.

Personality
The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is intelligent and energetic. As a versatile hunting dog, the Korthals Griffon is also a devoted and loyal family companion. In fact, not only is the dog breed gentle with children, but it has a sense of humor that will amuse you.

Loving and accepting of everyone, they have a devoted temperament. Thanks to their loving personality, they dislike being alone. When left alone, they develop separation anxiety. As such, they are not the right fit for sedentary owners. Because they are energetic, need to be handled and trained by people who lead an active lifestyle and experience.

What you need to know is that a well-trained Korthals Griffon is much relaxed and quieter. They form strong bonds with those who take care of them and are happy when they know their place in the pack.
