Description

The Llewellin Setter is a distinct breed that adheres to a stringent set of bloodlines dating back to the mid 19th century breeding program initiated by R.L. Purcell Llewellin. Originally considered an English Setter, this dog distinguished itself in that it was bred specifically for field work under strict precepts. This adherence and attention to detail in breeding gave way to a field dog of great enough repute that most dog enthusiasts today consider it apart from the English Setter. As a result, the breed excels at hunting, pointing and retrieval.

History

The Llewellin Setter is a breed of dog that not many may have heard of. While it's been around for quite some time (since the mid-19th century) it is often called an English Setter. And the debate starts right there.

The origins of this debate began in the 1860s. R.L. Purcell Llewellin started a breeding program with interest in developing these dogs for fieldwork. He used dogs he purchased from Edward Laverack and from there he began developing the breed. His breakthrough came in 1871 while attending a field trial. He purchased two dogs to breed with his Lavarack females and this was the genesis of the Llewellin Setter. This crossing produced the exact breed Llewellin was hoping for, a dog with top fieldwork. From this breeding came one of the most important Llewellin dogs, Gladstone. This dog established himself as a top field worker and sire, thus contributing to the Llewellin growing popularity.

As Llewellin was producing the breed of his dreams, they were also gaining notice from sportsmen in England and those in North America. This line was sweeping the field trial circuit causing those in the know to understand that Llewellin's were the dogs to beat. In fact, one of the dogs, Count Gladstone IV, took the very first National Bird Dog Championship in 1896.

So, what exactly IS a Llewellin Setter? Simply enough, it is a pure strain of the English Setter, very specific in nature. For a dog to be considered a Llewellin Setter, the bloodline must trace back to Llewellin's breeding program. The Field Dog Stud Book is the only one, though, which recognizes the dog as being its own breed. Its bloodline was so dominant back in the day over any other English Setter that it received its separate registry in 1902. In comparison, the American Kennel Club does not recognize Llewellin's separately from the English Setter rather they consider the Llewellin as just another "name" for the English Setter.

The differences between the dogs fall as to how they are bred. The Llewellin is mainly bred to be a hunting dog and they are smaller, weighing 35 to 60 pounds versus and English who comes in at 45 to 80 pounds. You will see the English Setter more as a show dog. The Llewellin will also have less feathering on its tail, belly, and legs than an English Setter. Appearance-wise, the Llewellin has a smooth, sleek, soft medium-long coat. Its color runs black and white, orange and white, and tricolor.

The Llewellin is both great as a pet and as a hunter. As a pet, they are very friendly. They are great around families with children. But they can also be active. They need time to play, time to run, so an active owner would work best for Llewellins. And even though they are an active dog, they have no problem settling in for the day once they received their exercise.

As hunters, they aren't classified as coon dogs but more bird dogs. Bred to hunt, Llewellin's are great hunting quail, grouse or pheasants. They are not known as waterfowl dogs so duck and goose most likely won't be on the menu. They have a keen sense of smell, love to point and are great gun dogs. And because of their breeding, they are also good at retrieval. But just because they are bred to hunt, that doesn't mean they just know how to. How one trains a Llewellin is a key to a successful hunting dog. They do have natural abilities but again, getting them out in the field is the best way to teach the dog to hunt.

As a pair, Llewellin's are great hunters. One pointing, one backing. They have a tendency to stay close to the gun on a hunt, they often come back to check on the hunters and the hunter can generally see them in open country as they don't run off or they can be easily found when there is heavy cover. Llewellin's have been described as dogs who want to find birds for their hunters versus findings birds for themselves. Llewellin's demonstrate a lot of intelligence, wonderful companionship and an eager attitude that makes it an excellent breed for hunting and as a pet.
