Its skull is moderately falt with a well-fitted skin while its nose and lips are black. Its muscle is relatively long and has flews that makes it appear square. Its eyes are brown with black eye rims. The Plott Hound tail is slightly low set and has a strong base tapering at the end. The female Plotts have a weight ranging between 40 to 65 pounds and a height of 20 to 25 inches. Contrastingly, the male breeds have a weight ranging between 50 to 75 pounds and height of 20 to 27 inches.
Plott Hound dog breed History
Although the Plott Hound dog breed was developed in the United States, it descends from Hanoverian Schweisshunds that were imported to North Caroline. Specifically, Johanness Georg Plott and his brother, who were Germany immigrants, brought five Hanoverian Schweisshunden of type Bloodhound in 1750 when they migrated to North Carolina. Johannes Plotts brother later died, and he decided to change his name to Jonathan Plott. Later on, Plott decided to breed a hound that could hunt bears and other large animals. In this case, he started breeding Hanoverian Schweisshundens with other Bloodhounds and Curs. The early dogs were expected to do several jobs such as hunting, guarding home from intruders, driving, and protecting livestock. Therefore, the breed was supposed to be hardy enough to hunt in the rough mountain terrains of the Western part of North Carolina.
Later on, when Georg Plott died, his family continued breeding the dogs named Plott Hounds. With time the popularity of this breed grew across the Smoky Mountain area. They used to hunt mountain lions and the wild boar. In attempts to develop Plotts abilities, breeders tried to crossbreed some the breeds with black and tan hounds. They ended having a black saddled brindle pattern dog breed.
Since it is a good hunter, the Plott Hound was used by the Japanese emperor in the 1960s in hunting bears that used to attack animals and people. The United Kennel Club recognized the Plott Hound breed in 1946. Later in 1989, North Caroline state named this breed as its official state dog. However, the American Kennel Club recognized and registered the Plott Hound breed in 2006.
The Plott Hound Coat colors
The Plott Hound dog breed has a smooth, shiny, thin, and dense coat that is weather resistant. The coat of this Plott Hound needs minimal maintenance. You should bathe and brush it occasionally. It is also good that you clean the dogs paws and ears to prevent debris from building up, especially after a hunting exercise. However, there are a few Plott Hounds that have a double coat that they shed heavily. As a result, such breeds are supposed to be brushed at least three or two times a week.
Moreover, their coat comes. Conversely, the double coat offers protection against weather conditions, a vital feature for a hunting dog.
The Plott Hounds usually comes in any brindle shade that is a coat patterned with streaks and specks of dark and light markings. The Brindles can be black, brown, blue, gray, orange, chocolate, buckskin, yellow, and tan. There are also others which have a black with a brindle trim or a black saddle.
Others come in a solid black or buckskin that comes in various shades, including golden tan, dark fawn, red fawn, yellow ochre, sandy red, and light cream. Regardless of the Plott Hounds color, many of them have some white spots on the feet and chest.
Characteristics
The Plott Hound is an agile and intelligent breed. It is a fierce fighter and has innate hunting skills. It is usually loyal to its master, making it a good guard dog. It is also related well with other dogs and kids. However, those who have this dog breed are advised to be cautious about it, especially when it is around cats, hares, rats, and birds due to its hunting skills. It is also important to socialize with this breed at an early age to assist it in developing good behaviors. Also, it is an obedient dog. Therefore, you will find it easier to train.
Although it makes a good companion, it does not adapt well to indoor environments. They are also sensitive to scents and like chasing small critters. But their sensitivity makes them the best in hunting.
