The Dogo Argentino dog breed is strong, with a chunky appearance and an athletic build. These dogs are also commonly called the Argentine Dogo or Argentinian Mastiff. They make great hunting companions as they are very loyal, have excellent stamina, and are a robust breed.

During a hunt, these dogs can be fierce, while at home, theyll be gentle and protective of their family. Dogo Argentino dogs are good with children and will fit into an active family. However, they do require a firm hand as they can be very strong-willed. The breed also has a high prey drive and is best suited to a family without any other pets.

The Dogo Argentino is a large breed of dog thats very muscular. They were bred for their strength and can sometimes be aggressive when hunting. These dogs do have a happy disposition and are gentle and loyal to their owner and family.

Dogo Argentinos are very active dogs that like having a job to do. They can get destructive when bored and shouldnt be left at home alone for too long. However, the dogs dont like strangers and need adequate socialization from a young age. They also make excellent watchdogs.

As well as being used for hunting the Dogo Argentino is often used by the police force and military. The breed can also work in search and rescue as they are large and can cover large areas over rough terrain.

If youre thinking of getting a Dogo Argentino puppy, its worth noting that approximately ten percent of dogs are deaf due to a pigment-related condition. Affected dogs are generally deaf in one or both ears and have a white coat.

History of the Dogo Argentino Breed

Antonio Nores Martinez initially bred the Dogo Argentino in Argentina to hunt wild boar. The breed is descended from hunting dogs such as the Fighting Dog of Cordoba, which has now become extinct.

Martinez aimed to breed a hunting dog that was large, fearless, and able to hunt in mountainous terrain. He also wanted a dog that would make a loyal companion and would be able to work in a pack with other dogs.

Martinez started breeding dogs in the 1920s using several breeds that were traditionally used for fighting. However, he didnt want a fighting dog and aimed to produce a dog with a reduced desire to fight.

Martinez was able to breed a dog that was loyal, brave, and trustworthy with a strong prey drive. The resulting dogs were muscular and could hunt for hours in the rough Argentinean terrain without getting tired. They were also loyal to their owners and excellent watchdogs and family pets. Unfortunately, the Dogo Argentino was also used as a fighting dog and is sometimes still used in organized dog fights due to the breeds strength, tenacity, and stamina.

The appearance of the breed

Dogo Argentinos are a very large, robust breed of dog. They grow to between twenty-four and twenty-seven inches to the shoulder. Male dogs are generally slightly bigger than females. These dogs weigh around ninety pounds, with some males weighing in at up to 100 pounds.

Dogo Argentinos have long bodies and are very muscular. They have broad heads and are often mistaken for American Pit Bull Terriers. The bred has a short coat which is white, grey or white and black. Most dogs are mainly white with a black spot on their head or around their eye.

As the breed has a short coat, they are easy to keep clean and dont require much grooming. The Dogo Argentino can be brushed every week and washed every few months. Some owners wash their dogs more often if they are hunting in muddy conditions and get dirty, while others will take their dogs for a swim in a lake or river to get clean.

Although the Dogo Argentino has short fur, the breed are moderate shedders. However, this isnt too noticeable as the fur is short. You can use a lint roller to get dog hairs off your furniture.

Dogo Argentinos are active dogs, and if you decide to bring home a puppy, youll need to ensure it gets plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. If not correctly socialized or left alone for too long, the breed can become bored, aggressive, or destructive.

Dogo Argentinos are excellent for hunting big-game such as wild boars as they are fearless and aggressive hunters. With proper training from a young age, these dogs make great family pets and hunting companions, as well as good watchdogs.
