Finnish Hound is an attractive medium-sized dog breed, predominantly known for its hunting prowess. Blessed with immense athleticism, these dogs have melodic barks that alert the hunter whenever there is prey. And once they decide to pursue a prey, it cannot escape these determined canines.

Typically, Finnish Hounds are calm and friendly; hence, they tend to bond well with their owners. However, if you are looking to keep them as pets, you need to ensure that they adequately exercise and dont leave them alone for long periods.

History

The history of the Finnish Hound goes back to 1889, when a group of hunting enthusiasts formed SuomenKennelklubi (later replaced by the Finnish Kennel Club). They were interested in developing versatile hunting dogs that would withstand Finlands rough terrains and freezing wintery conditions. The Finnish Hound was the result of breeding efforts involving a variety of French, Swedish, and German Hounds.

To date, this breed has maintained its position as one of the best-hunting dogs within Scandinavia. They are also the leading dog breed in detecting scents out of all the other hounds.

Appearance

The Finnish hound breed has an athletic body and strong muscles to match its stamina and hardiness. Most males stand between 55 and 61 cm, while females stand between 52 and 58 cm. Since they are primarily designed as hunting dogs, they are not excessively heavy; most of them have a weight ranging between 20 and 25 kg. Their physical traits are similar to those of a Beagle, although they have a slightly longer body.

Coat

This dog breed has a smooth coat that is generally easy to take care of. They have a tricolor pattern of tan, white, and black with white markings on the feet, head, chest, and the tails tip. To maintain the coats hygiene levels, you should brush it with a soft rush or a grooming mitt at least once per week. While the breed is known to shed moderately, regular washing and brushing should be enough to reduce hair loss. Also, keep the nails short and the ears clean and dry to prevent the dog from getting ear infections.

Temperament/ Behavior

In a home setting, the Finnish Hound is calm and friendly, and you can house them together with other scent hounds. However, they are independent in nature, meaning they can develop a stubborn streak at times.

The real character of this dog breed is manifested in hunting environments. They are not only alert and energetic, but they also possess immense stamina and endurance. They also prefer to work independently as opposed to operating with a pack. And just so you know, these hunting dogs do not care about the weather when hunting. Their drive and enthusiasm ensure that they can work in any environment.

Since these dogs are primarily designed for hunting, it is not recommendable to keep them if you want a pure companion pet, as they tend to get bored quickly with inactivity.

Exercise Requirements

Due to their workaholic nature, these dog breeds possess high energy levels, hence the need for regular exercises. It is advisable that you schedule at least 30 minutes of simple to rigorous activities daily. If you have a fenced yard, they will also appreciate having unlimited time to run.

Apart from regular exercises, the Finnish Hound will also require adequate mental stimulation to keep the mind sharp and prevent boredom. Keep in mind that the more a dog is bored, the more they will become stubborn and destructive.

Trainability

The Finnish Hound has natural instincts when it comes to scenting and hunting. This means that you dont have to train them in these areas. Unfortunately, this is not the case with other training aspects, which this dog breed might struggle with. Due to their stubbornness and independence, they tend to ignore commands, and therefore training them can sometimes be a tall order. As a trainer, you must practice patience and calmness while maintaining a close relationship with the dog through tasty treats.

The Finish hound is your ultimate hunting dog. If you want to keep one, you must be prepared to go the extra mile to keep them active and vibrant. Otherwise, if youre looking to get a Finnish hound and then reduce their natural hunting instincts, such as their scenting abilities and high prey drive, your chances of succeeding dont look good.
