Description

Slovakian Rough Haired Pointers are gundogs with a lot of stamina and a diverse set of skills. They are a relatively young breed, with roots in their native Slovakia that carry on today. They can make great working companion dogs, well-exercised family pets, or hunting dogs with a wide set of skills.

The Appearance and Characteristics of the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointers

What are the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointers's coat colorings? This breed is only able to be registered with the UK Kennel Club when it has the gray coloring it inherited from the Weimaraner in its background. This breed is either gray, or gray roan, though white is allowed on the chest and feet. Their dense coat is harsh and wiry to the touch and of a medium length.

They don't shed much, but to keep their coat in good condition requires weekly brushing.

How is this breed built? This breed is known for being sturdy but not heavy. They are of moderate strength.

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointers have slightly larger males than females. The male dogs range from 24 to 27 inches in height and 55 to 76 pounds in weight. The females of this breed are usually 22 to 25 inches tall and weigh between 55 and 70 pounds.

Their eyes are either a blue or amber shade and are deep set. Their eyes are often an azure shade in youth and become amber as they age. Some breeding associations only permit dogs that follow this eye coloring pattern. They also look for black noses and paws.

Their chests are long and oval shaped. They have strong, straight backs. Their rectangular shaped heads are broad.

Do they go by any other names? These dogs are known by many names in English, though they are all very similar. Some of their names include the Slovak Pointing Griffon, the Slovak Wirehaired Pointing Dog, Slovak Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, and the Slovak Wirehaired Pointer. In Slovakia, they are sometimes called Slovensky Hrubosrsky Stavac.

How do the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointers do as family pets? Though they are affectionate dogs that are loyal and eager to please, its uncommon for them to be kept as pets. They are energetic and will need to be watched around young children and trained how to behave around them, they do get along well with children.

These dogs are obedient and easy to train, which makes a great temperament for both family pets and gundogs. They are not known for being used as guard dogs, despite their size.

Ideally, these dogs will live in a rural environment where they have a lot of room for regular exercise, since they are active dogs with a lot of energy. They will not be happy sleeping all day and can become problems if they're not kept active. To be kept happy, they will need about an hour and a half of walking daily.

How are they as hunting dogs? These popular bird dogs are known as excellent pointers and retrievers. They are eager to please, loyal, and enthusiastic hunters. They do well both on land and in the water, hunting prey from deer to rabbits to waterfowl.

What concerns are there about the health of this breed? As far as their health is concerned, the biggest concern for them has been hip dysplasia, which is fairly common and difficult with this breed. For minor concerns, they are more prone to eye infections, allergies, and atopic dermatitis. To keep them in top health, they need to have their eyes and ears regularly examined, blood tests performed, and hip and elbow x-rays, as well as regular full physicals to check on their condition.

The History of the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointers

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointers are still a young breed. They originated in the 1950s in Slovakia. After World War II, Kolomak Slimak aimed to breed a gundog great at prey ranging from birds to deer. They were bred to be gundogs who could point, track, and retrieve both in the water and on land. The result was the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer. There are three different breeds that are believed to be the ancestors for this breed, including the Weimaraner, German Wirehaired Pointer and Český Fousek.

There are a fair number of this breed in the UK, where they were introduced in 1997.

Today, in Slovakia, the registered dogs of this breed must all pass working hunting trials. Most dogs of this breed found in other countries are imported from Slovakia still, which means these hunting dogs remain true to their breeding roots and traditions as working dogs.
