The Jagd Terrier has many names - German Jagd Terrier, German Hunt Terrier, and Deutscher Jagd Terrier. It possesses a spirit of liveliness and a bit of fire which is evident in its expression. What the Jagd Terrier lacks in size, it makes up for in courage and toughness.
History of the Jagd Terrier
The Jagd Terrier was originally bred in Germany in the 1920s as a functional hunting dog. Hunters used the dog breed on a wide variety of hunts, including badgers, foxes, and wild boar. After World War I, a division occurred between the members of the German Fox Terrier Club.
This resulted in some of the members creating a new breed. They crossed the Russel Terriers with tan and white coats and the Fox Terrier with black and tan coats. They began breeding with four Fox Terriers. The initial phase of the breeding program focused on defining the physical features.
What the group wanted was to maintain the signature coat colors of the Fox Terrier. They also bred in favor of the rough coat over the smooth coat. The rough coat is highly advantageous to hunting dogs. It sheds water and dirt quickly while maintaining the dogs body temperature during the cold months of winter.
The group achieved success with its initial phase. They successfully bred nice-looking terriers with excellent hunting abilities. To improve the hunting performance of the new breed, the group embarked on another breeding program. This time they chose the English Wirehaired Terriers and Welsh Terriers. Both dog breeds are fierce and alert but intelligent, spirited, and friendly too.
After completion of the breeding program, they produced the modern-day descendants of the Jagd Terrier. The new dog breed is fierce and alert. As such, if confronted by large predators such as bobcats and cougars, its able to stand its ground.
The new Jagd Terrier dog breed survived the chaos of World War II, although their numbers diminished. In the 1950s, a couple of Jagd Terriers made it to the US, where its population thrived, but the breed remains rare in the UK. As such, the UK Kennel Club does not recognize the Jagd Terrier dog breed.
Jagd Terrier Appearance
The Jagd Terrier is a small dog standing at 13 to 16 inches (33 to 40 cm) tall. It weighs 20 - 22 pounds (9 to 10 kg) and has a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. Since its a mix of other terriers, it has a short-haired, hard coat with feathering on the backs of its legs.
Some of the Jagd Terriers have longer hair on the muzzle, which gives them a bearded appearance. But most Jagd Terriers are black with tan-colored markings around their chest, legs, eyebrows, muzzles, and legs. Some of the markings may be liver brown, white, or chocolate. White markings and a brown nose are usually not favored.
Although they have a dense short-haired coat with a firm bristle brush and comb, its easy to groom them. You can remove loose hair by wiping the thick coat with a warm damp cloth. The Jagd Terrier is an average shedder.
While the Jagd Terrier is small, it boasts of an alert appearance. Its energetic and athletic with a fiery expression in their eyes. The Jagd Terrier has a wedge-shaped head with the area between the ears being flat and tapered towards their eyes.
The Jagd Terrier has a short muzzle with strong underjaws and prominent cheeks. The upper jaw is strong, too, with a perfect scissor bite. The eyes are small and dark in color. Jagd Terriers noses are black, but you may come across certain breeds with brown noses and more brown on their coats. This is acceptable too.
It has a deep chest with broad shoulders, especially around the nape. The shoulders slope towards the well-muscled front legs. A Jagd Terrier has a deep chest with well-sprung ribs and laid back. It has a compact and sturdy body with short-level backs and muscular loins.
The hindquarters are muscular and angulated, with the tail well set, much like the Foxhound when alert and working.
Jagd Terrier Temperament
The Jagd Terrier is fearless and courageous. Its intelligent, reliable, sociable, strong-willed, and adaptable. Because its tenacious, they are notorious for having a high prey drive. This is what makes them excellent hunters. Their tenacity is also a disadvantage as they do not get along with other dogs. This being the case, a Jagd Terrier is not an ideal family pet.
If kept in a home or an apartment, the Jagd Terrier can be a problem due to its high energy drive. As an active dog, the Jagd Terrier needs plenty of exercises. It requires a daily walk and lots of games. If living in a home with a large backyard, the Jagd Terrier will love it, thanks to the big yard where they can run and play.
Jagd Terrier Health Problems
As a fairly healthy breed, theyre prone to field-related injuries such as bruises, scrapes, and cuts. To avoid this, the Jagd Terriers tail is always docked to a length of 2 inches. The Jagd Terrier does not suffer from congenital and hereditary health issues common in other dog breeds. However, there have been reports of some dogs developing Primary Lens Luxation, a hereditary eye disorder.
