Bird hunters need to carry a knife. A good knife. One that is tailored to execute tasks across a myriad of landscapes and environments where gamebirds will be encountered, shot, field dressed, and ultimately cooked and eaten. For wingshooters, knives that are purpose-built for cleaning, skinning, and breaking down wild fowl are crucial for efficient and safe game processing. The knife needs to be capable of handling basic camp and home cutting chores too – be it deboning a bomber sage grouse on a tailgate or slicing bite-sized chunks of a pheasant rooster around a campfire, and or making delicate work of carving up little quail hors d'oeuvres in the kitchen.

Danner Sharptail Hunting Boot Review

This is my review of the Danner Sharptail 8” GORE-TEX hunting boots. The day I received these boots in the mail and opened the box, my wife walked into the room. She immediately saw the Danner box and started telling me, for the fifth time, about how she used to sell shoes at an outdoor adventure store in Nashville and how they sent her to some special class to learn about all about boots. I hadn’t even gotten the boots out of the box yet, and she’s telling me that Danner makes the best boots, bar none. I waited until she finished her story and left the room before taking the boots out of the boxes so I could form my own opinion. My first impression upon removing the boots from the box was how well built they looked and felt. The boots were sturdy and stiff like tiny little Sherman tanks for your feet.

A Dread Problem and a Solution

`Upland` Chaps

The snow had begun to accumulate. Measuring just high enough that each boot step would certainly put me into almost ten inches of the white stuff. The landscape was wet with freshly fallen snow. Its weight had pushed down all the dried, tan switchgrass that fall and winter brings. I opened the back half of the truck’s cab to get to my gear bag. I unzipped the main compartment and pulled out matching tan chaps. They were quickly put on over my pants and secured. An hour into my hunt, I quickly found the chaps sole purpose that day was to keep me dry. I had pushed though snow-laden grass, flushing roosters who had taken to burrowing themselves in small openings to get out of the weather. If I had not worn chaps, I would’ve been one wet and cold bird hunter.

CHAMPION WHEELYBIRD AUTO-FEED TRAP REVIEW

I've had my eye on this electronic clay thrower for a few years. Browsing the sporting goods section of the local Walmart, I'd see this unit sitting in the store's back corner. I've debated buying it several times in the past but always talked myself out of it. I have a hand thrower and a manual spring load trap that I've used for years. The problem with these is you have to have a partner tag along to use them. Coordinating with someone else is not always the most convenient when you're just looking for a quick tune-up. The manual trap I own does have a trigger that you can attach a string to, so it can be released from a distance, but this has never worked well for me, and you still wouldn't be able to release and shoot your own targets. The manual trap was too difficult for my wife and kids to operate, so I usually loaded and threw while they shot. The hand thrower isn't much different. Since all my kids have flown the coup, I was looking for a way to practice shooting before bird season without needing help. It's probably not advisable to go shooting by yourself, but the main reason I purchased this thrower was in the hopes I could release and shoot targets on my own. I also picked up one of the Wheelybird Wireless Remotes, although the foot pedal would have been easy enough to operate. Now, I can move around without a tether, so I can get a look at different shots without adjusting or moving the machine.
