Started/Finished dog

by ROBERT BORN on 11:42:42 PM 09/12/2013 - [ Send Private Message ]

I am in the process of investing in my first retriever and have seen a lot of different dogs for sale for different prices. I know breeding and level of training have a lot to do with price..but I have seen MH dogs for sale for $5000 and have also seen started dogs for the same price. Just looking for a little feed back on what I should expect a 5 to $6000 dog to be. Thanx for any response.

I have a finished GUN DOG for sale. He has all his obedience, force fetched, and ready to go hunt. He is for sale for $3,500. I would not pay $5,000. for a Master Hunter. Now if this dog has been playing in the FIELD TRIALS then I would pay $5,000-6,000 - all depending on his placings in the field trials.

I have a Hunting Retriever Champion for sale for $6000. Hes passed 6 Finished Tests in a row Fall 2013 and is a great family dog as well. He does not have a pedigree to speak of but, if he did Id be asking $8000. He is steady as a rock at the line, is very easy to handle on blinds. My 12 year old daughter is learning to mark doubles and run 150 yard blinds with him.

Trip marks triples at 200 yards and can run 300 yard blinds. If he is not sold he will be running the Spring Grand in 2014.

The advantage of buying a Finished dog over a Started in that you know what you have. You can buy the best bred pup out there, $1000 then invest 6 months of training, $3000 (minimum) and may not end up with you want.
