Pen raised quail lacking scent??

by BILLY STAFFORD on 09:48:28 PM 09/05/2022 - [ Send Private Message ]

Today I planted a pen raised quail. My dog had no idea he was near a bird until he almost stepped on the bird and the bird moved. Can there be an issue of lack of scent in pen raised birds? My dog has found and pointed in the past. thanks

Im not an expert on the subject, but I wouldnt think being a pen raised bird would make much of a difference. Although how you handle the bird might make a difference. I believe it more likely to be related to the scenting conditions on that day. Maybe little to no wind or high temperature / humidity. There are so many other factors that could be considered. How long had the bird been planted? How thick was the cover the bird was planted in. Did it allow for the wind to disperse the scent. How long had the dog been running. Was he upwind or downwind from the bird.

I stand corrected. I just posted an article by Tom Keer where they talk about using pen raised birds.

“I remember Safari, a pointer bitch I had back in the ‘70’s. Safari was a big running, hard-working girl. She won 10 open championships and was the top dog in the world. One day we had a box of raised quail in the truck and we released ‘em in the field. I cut Safari loose, and she wouldn’t point a single one of ‘em. Wild and released birds smell differently, but she wanted nothing to do with those tame birds. Safari was a wild bird dog, plain and simple.
