Crate Advice/Help!!

by ERIC GRIFFITH on 09:08:22 AM 01/27/2017 - [ Send Private Message ]

I have a new CBR puppy coming home in April and need some advice for a crate. I dont have anything at the moment so I cant figure out if a wire, hard, or soft sided crate is best. I want something that can easily be transferred to and from the bed of my Titan (Does not have a camper on it) to the living room. My wife wants something that isnt an eyesore in the house. I know it needs a travel cover and/or an indoor cover to create a den feeling. In Colorado I travel 2-4 hours to hunt upland birds in the fall-spring. What words of wisdom can the community provide?

Thank you

Eric

Your best option is to purchase two crates. Id get a plastic (hard sided) crate (kennel) for use in your pickup and a nice looking wire crate for in the house.

If you are transporting the crate in the back of your pickup make sure you tie or strap it down.

George,

That sounds like a great idea however 1) I am on a very limited budget (arent most of us): 2) The only time I can really justify to the Mrs. to have two crates would be during hunting season (why cant you just take it out of the truck when youre not using it?).

I dont want to put my dog in any danger by getting a cheap one but can spend 100s of dollars on the absolute best when I have all the other goodies to buy (bumpers, leashes, training)

Any other thoughts?

Thanks

Eric

Check on eBay. Ive bought some crates/kennels on eBay at some very good prices.

Not more than $150

Do you have an opinion on the Petmate brand? They seem inexpensive and have the ability to be tied down in a truck.

Petmate is a good basic kennel. Ive used them for years but my dogs travel in the back of my SUV not a pickup. You will probably need to invest in a kennel cover for the times you are transporting your dog in cold temps.

You should be able to buy a new Petmate kennel for under $100. Check Petco.com, Walmart.com and eBay.

Start with that kennel and you can upgrade down the road. When you have some extra funds available you might still consider buying a wire crate for in the house.

So I went ahead and bought a Petmate brand kennel for the puppy. Its supposed to come with a divider to allow less space when she is a puppy and then grow as she does. Hopefully it will workout.

Pardon my ignorance, but for a CBR what would be too cold for her to travel in a bed of a pickup. They are bred to retrieve in the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay and have the coat to protect them. Also, this one was born in CT in Jan so I assume her line is used to the colder temps. Again, pardon the ignorance, but I have never been to CT so I do not know what the winters are like compared to CO.

It seems most hunting day I go on for pheasants there isnt usually snow and I find myself wearing one layer with a jacket and gloves. Dont usually wear gators or heavy head cover.
