Had our dog xrayed this week. Vet recommends the last week of gestation to get a head count. Theres a blood test to find out sooner

I have raised multiple litters and never had a ultra sound done. It has not been an issue until the last 2 litters. I lost 2 puppies from the last 2 litters because they were stillborn. It will be part of my protocol from now on. The value of the puppies lost was worth having an ultrasound to determine the number of puppies.

I dont take much stock in the blood tests. Had a false positive with my female. She went into a double heat cycle and bred with my other male. Wasnt impressed.

Ultrasound is low risk, gives you an idea of numbers and a yes or no sooner, which can help people decide who want to place a deposit on a litter - if you choose to take reservations at that point. Ultrasound is not perfectly accurate, however. If they see 8, for example, count on 1 or 2 more just in case. Some have ultrasounded 2 and wound up with 9. It more or less often determines pregnancy.

With x-ray its imperative to wait due to the radiation until the last week of gestation. At that point, you are probably pretty certain of pregnancy anyway and may as well wait-and-see.

Unless there are complications or you dont have access to ultrasound, I think ultrasound is the way to go if possible. Check pricing when you schedule, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Couldn’t get a breeding in last 2 heats. Had progesterone blood tests, nailed the 2 days she was most fertile. Litter on way. Ultrasound done to get an idea of how many.
