How much to puppies sell for?

I’ll occasionally get a phone call, text or email from someone asking how much money they should be asking for their puppies when listing them on Gundog Central. I have a ton of data that I’ve collected on dog prices over the years and decided to put together this quick list showing the average list price for puppies, by breed. I’ve also looked at the trending data for the past five years to see if puppy prices were rising or falling, but didn’t see a lot of movement for the most popular breeds. Below you’ll find the median list price for puppies, broken down by breed, over the past year. These are puppy prices only, it does not include started or finished dogs.

If you’re a buyer looking for a new puppy, the list below should give you a good idea what you should expect to pay. Keep in mind that better breed puppies will probably be listed for higher than the median price. That doesn’t mean you can’t find a good puppy at a lower price, I’ve personally bought plenty of dogs at lower prices that turned out to be great bird dogs. Just be mindful that higher priced dogs might come with health guarantees where lower price dogs may not. Generally, puppies are priced lower because the seller is motivated to sell them. It could be because of the breeder’s situation, such as a divorce or lost job. It’s possible they may not be breeders at all, they could have had an accidentally breeding and priced the puppies lower hoping to draw interest. I’ve heard plenty of stories from hunter who have great hunting dogs that they breed to keep a bloodline going, they’re only looking for a puppy to raise and hunt in the future, but don’t have an outlet for the rest of the litter. Lower price puppy can also be priced this way because of a bad disposition, bad bite or other health related issue. If you suspect a puppy is underpriced, ask the breeder why, if it’s because of a bad bite or timid disposition, make sure that’s something you’re willing to deal with. If possible, try to see and inspect the puppy in person before making purchase, regardless of the asking price.

If you’re a breeder, this document isn’t meant to tell what to ask for your puppies on Gundog Central, many of you already have a set asking prices for puppies and I don’t recommend that you change them. However, you might use this list as a guide to determine your own pricing strategy. If you feel that you’re a premium breeder, offering health guarantees and proven bloodlines, then you should probably be asking more than the median price. If you’re an accidently breeder, then you might set your price a little below the average asking price.

When I created Gundog Central, it was to help people place their hunting dogs in hunting homes. I want everyone to be successfully using the site, so l thought I'd try my hand at creating a few articles filled with knowledge and lessons I've learned over the years running this site. I'm certainly not a writer and I'm a terrible speller, and although I promise to make an effort to proofread and spellcheck these articles before I post them, you'll most likely find them riddled with grammatical errors. I don't know if I'd even really call them articles per say, more of a collection of tips and tricks to help you get the most out of Gundog Central. Tips on how to sell your dogs and tricks on how to use the site. I have no plans to write any other articles, as I have great writers already contributing content to the site. My focus with these "articles" will be geared towards helping you be successful selling your dogs and marketing your kennel and services on Gundog Central.

The Great Debate: Pointing or Flushing Dogs for Quail

Posted on Wednesday 31st December 1969 06:00:00 PM

My wife said I winced when we pulled up to the only game in town. It was an old motel of a vintage that reminded me of the Golden Era of travel by car. Over the years families probably over-nighted here while on their way to any one of a number of the nearby wild quail Valhallas. No visible capital improvements had been done for a long time, at least I couldn't see any renovation. The 30-some-odd rooms looked sad while the adjoining restaurant and tavern was booming.

Best hunting dog breeds for upland hunting

Posted on Wednesday 31st December 1969 06:00:00 PM

There are several dog breeds that excel in upland hunting, and the best breed for you depends on your specific preferences and hunting style. Whether you’re flushing bobwhite quail in the piney woods of the Southeast, chasing sharp-tailed grouse across the grasslands of the Northern Great Plains, stalking ring-necked pheasants in the grain fields of the Midwest, pursuing chukar in the rocky terrain out West, or hunting ruffed grouse and woodcock in the dense young forests of the Great Lakes region, each breed is tailored to a different type of hunt. Finding the right one for your hunting situation can be key to success in the field.
